On September 22nd, 1994 NBC premiered it’s new comedy show on Thursday nights about six friends in their early twenties trying to start their lives in New York City. It’s been eighteen years exactly since that day - the birth of a show that produced ten more incredible seasons between 1994 and 2004.
I really can’t even wrap my head around the fact that it’s been eighteen years since Friends came on the air. Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry, the two youngest cast members, were only about a year and a half older than I am now. They were all so young and so green; even Courteney Cox, who was probably the best known, was not some huge entity. They were all just getting their start, much like their characters. It is stunning to think it’s been as long as it has since Studio 24 opened it’s doors and gave us the gift of Friends.
This show - for being just a television show - has given me a lot of laughs. It’s given me a lot of love, a lot to hope for, and a lot to lean on. I almost yearn for the Thursday nights I spent with these six when I was just a young teenager. They gave me the opportunity to smile, to decompress, and to lose myself in their easier, much more heartfelt world. During the times when life wasn’t so funny, they were the easiest sell in order to get me to crack a grin. Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross became as much a part of me as anybody in my day-to-day existence, and they stick with me even today. That is the mark of a good show - when the writing and the acting is so good where you don’t just love the characters. You become at one with them.
In conclusion, here’s to you: Jennifer, Courteney, Lisa, Matt, Matthew, David, and every writer and creator that ever touched this masterpiece of a show. Happy birthday, Friends.
